    Bitching - A Vent Post

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 06:19 PM PST

I'm going to bitch about a few things that happened today just to see if it's this toxic server I've been playing, or if its generally the same. Mostly because it wipes tomorrow and I'm considering skipping it and finding one to play on thursday.

Preamble: I played a bit of legacy rust something like 1.5k hours, and just came back a couple months ago and learned all the new stuff by playing some modded servers and now playing some "less" modded servers. + some spray practice because I got sick of everyone lasering me down before I shot back. The games a fucking blast again.

I'm sure it's been said a lot here, but I don't know because like I said I haven't played for a while. People always bitch about literally everything imaginable. I kill someone with a DB shortly after I join the wipe, "You're a fucking grub". I kill someone with an LR - "you can't spray with ak hahahahaha fucking 1v1 me ucn." Some dude is trying to build next to me, I climb on my TWO story roof, no windows, no shoot room and kill him. "You're a roof camping bitch" I hear some shots in the distance - "Yeah come third party you piece of shit" Oh and also, I should mention I play mostly solo, and my duo plays off and on as he's currently taking finals.

Like I seriously wonder, can you do anything in this game without being called bad or otherwise? What is everyone's problem in this game? It's like if you're not playing it the way that makes them win the fight, you're playing it wrong. I don't know, I'm just ranting to rant. All in all, this game is fun as shit and you guys post a lot of hilarious videos/memes.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 02:45 PM PST

    Hello!

I am conducting a survey for my Dissertation on Early Access and its effect on the Indie sector of Game Development, Rust being one of my prime examples of games that actually released via Early Access. I would like to get your experiences or views on the Early Access model, Steam Early Access or otherwise. If you'd like to take part in the anonymous survey, find the link to the Google Form below!

How to Get Started: 14-Step Noob Guide to Waking Up and Building a Base

How to Get Started: 14-Step Noob Guide to Waking Up and Building a Base

So this is just a simple guide on how I get through the early game. Everyone has different methods, this is mine. I am still a noob but improving fast. I recommend if you are a new player, that you log on to low pop servers to practice building a few times. Low pop servers are servers that have very few people on them. The most real experience is on official servers though, so go there once you feel confident in your farming and building abilities. Good luck.

    1. Check the map for a good spot close to a small monument like Supermarket, Mining Outpost and Gas Station. As a beginner, avoid larger monuments and centre of the map because you will get killed too much. Place a marker on your chosen spot by right-clicking on the map.

    2. Run towards your marker and collect any loose stones, tree stumps and hemp and food you see on the way.

    3. As soon as you have 30 cloth, make a sleeping bag and place it down on the ground so that you can respawn in the bag, which is closer to your chosen spot, if you die somehow, which happens a lot. Placing 1 sleeping bag every 5 grid squares or so will be good.

    4. When you get to your spot, place a sleeping bag somewhere, then, next to something easy to remember, place a stash. I usually use a bush so that I don't need to bury it. MAKE SURE YOU'RE NOT BEING WATCHED.

    5. Place a new marker, right on top of your stash, so you can find.

    6. If you can, now is a good time to craft a hatchet, it makes farming trees much faster. You will need 200 wood and 100 stone. Once you get the hatchet, farm trees. Every time you cut a couple down, stash the wood in your stash.

    7. Once you have 2000 wood, craft a Tool Cupboard (TC), a double wooden door and 2 simple locks, 1 small box and put them in your stash.

    8. Farm more trees until you have 2000 wood again, then follow Evil Wurst's Youtube guide on how to build a 2x1 base with an airlock. Choose the location of your base carefully, if you are on a slope, make sure you have enough room for your foundations.

    9. Make sure you build walls the right way around. They have a hard side and a soft side. If you are building from "inside" the base, you want to be able to see the cross supports (a big X across the wall) when you place the wall. You can press R to flip the wall. This is important.

    10. Once you have a base upgraded to wood (You can upgrade by crafting a hammer, looking at the wall, clicking RMB, moving your mouse up a bit so that the little axe goes full white, then clicking LMB. Upgrade ALL parts of your base. DO NOT forget foundations.

    11. Farm 200 wood and 100 stone, then craft a stone pickaxe. Use this pickaxe to farm 3500 Stone. Run back to your base and store stone every time you finish a node. It takes a bit longer, but you will probably actually finish the base faster this way due to not losing all your stuff to murdering thieves.

    12. Upgrade your base to stone.

    13. Now, you want to collect cloth, wood, stone, low grade and rope until you can craft yourself some burlap clothes, a bow & arrows, a spear (optional), a furnace and some wooden armour. Rope and low-grade fuel can be found by bashing barrels open. Barrels are found near roads and tracks. Remember to open big brown crates and red toolboxes too because you might find something decent. You need 2 ft of rope to make a wood armour set (the helmet uses cloth instead).

    1. Make the furnace and put metal ore in there with some wood. Turn it on and start cooking. Replace all of your wooden doors with sheet metal doors. Make sure you put the locks back on and lock them. You can also get the metal fragments you need for doors from recycling scrap components you find in barrels and crates by roads. This is a bit more dangerous though because roads and monuments are popular places.

14a. Bonus tip. Wander around and be nosey. You'll get killed, repeatedly, but you'll learn stuff and find stuff. If you hear something that sounds like a bunch of wood falling down some stairs, run towards it and you'll find a decaying base. Loot fast and run for your life.

Basically, for the start of the game, that is it. You will now be in a good position to rob other noobs like yourself and hopefully not get raided. It took me quite a few tries to get okay at this process. At first, it is really annoying, you feel like you are losing everything all the time and that the game is stupid and impossible. And, at times, it is, but what you need to remember every time you rage quit is that you just learned something and got a little better at the game. Play something else until you feel the urge for more punishment and then log back on. You'll still be making mistakes in your 100th hour, nobody's perfect, it's just a game 😊
