Bloody mouse users from under the rock

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 06:51 AM PST

Months and years go by on this subreddit, dozens and dozens of threads about scripting and bloody mouse go by and not a single comment from its users. Not a single "I own bloody mouse but don't use it to script" or "I have A4tech mouse because its comfortable but didn't know you can cheat with it". Quite a few "Laughs in bloody mouse" comments as they feel untouchable though.

The much need blanket ban arrives and suddenly "I own bloody mouse but don't use it to script" comments start popping up everywhere, suddenly everyone is innocent, suddenly Facepunch is the bad guy, suddenly fixed recoil is the problem. Now that they don't have the upper hand anymore and didn't learn the recoil - they demand #randomrecoil. Maybe if you spent the last year learning the recoil like the rest of the 99.5% of Rust players instead of taking the easy way out you wouldn't be in this situation.

You literally cannot google bloody mouse without seeing all the cheating related results. Acting oblivious to its cheating capabilities is incriminating as fuck.

With the recent blanket ban of bloody mice/a4tech, the large majority of the pvp chads have disappeared, I haven't been sprayed from 100-150m from an ak to a triple headshot (which was happening quite frequently) since the blacklist. Can't believe how much more fun (and quite frankly, easier) ak pvp is now that people don't have an easy, undetectable way to turn rust into cod. Haven't been a fan of every update for the past year or two but this ones a dream come true. Ty FP <3

There was no problem with the spray , after the hackers got banned and are shit the game now the cry to change recoil to random.

I wish there were more primitive weapons.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 04:14 PM PST

I want more pieces of shit to use in the early stage of rust. I want more Eoka esq weapons. Imagine an early game weapon that has a clip, but might jam, or might misfire, or might not even shoot at all. I think it would add a whole other layer of the game.

Oh and, please, can the 15 scrap cost of the nail gun be removed? For a weapon that's supposed to be used in the early game, it doesn5make sense that I have to give up on of the most important resources for starting out. Make it use like, a propane tank or something. There aren't many uses for that at the moment.

Getting started as a solo on high pop vanilla servers (long guide)

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 02:10 PM PST

I've found a lot of guides online either assume you are a PvP god or that you are a complete bot that needs to build away from everything. This post is more geared towards your average player that knows what he's doing but struggles to get started playing as a solo. I have around 4500 hours with more than half being a solo on vanilla high pop servers.

One thing to note - this is just one method that works for me. After a fresh BP wipe I almost always have guns/tier 2 by the second day and a tier 3 down around day 3-4 at the latest. You can definitely do things way quicker using a heli to clear oil/launch but this method is more about making steady progress without having to use a heli to clear monuments.

    Base Location

By far the best location for a solo on vanilla servers is near Launch Site. Older Rust guides advise solos to build near tier 1's but that's bullshit. The further you get from new spawn beaches the less population density you'll see. I've also noticed big active groups tend to build more near the water for easy Oil Rig access and PvP compared to the old compounds around Launch you used to see.

Your main goal for placing your base is to make sure you can farm scrap, components, wood, low grade and cloth easily without dying. Farming nodes doesn't have to be done as often and can be done safely almost anywhere on the map so scrap/component farming is the focus. The issue with building somewhere quiet is that you're going to have to run past bases/roads after scrap farming to return home and if you end up dying it will set you back 30min-hour.

As long as it's not located near the snow Launch can provide you with every major resource your need. It has increased cloth/animal spawns, a safe refinery for low grade, 5x more barrels/boxes than pretty much any other monument. The issue with other monuments is that they require keycards and most of the time they are getting quickly cleared by people using helis. With launch I focus on clearing all barrels/crates - there's two guaranteed military crates (one at the top of the elevator, the other jumping into the chainlink fence area) that constantly spawn.

Even without doing keycard puzzle you can clear launch and get around 500-700 scrap + a ton of components (and hazmats/db/revos). I've had wipes where I'll have thousands of frags before I even put a furnace down just bc you can get so much if you hit all the barrels around launch.

The other really important thing about Launch is that it's one of the best areas to PvP as a solo. If you learn how to rotate through Launch to avoid open spaces you can clear it without ever being in the open. It's really hard to win lopsided fights in open space bc it's aim dependent. Launch evens the playing field because you can sneak around and only take 1v1 fights when attacking a group.

The ideal location is right near the no-build zone of launch (prevents neighbors building between you and launch) with some cover (hill/forests) outside of view of any bases (especially compounds). My main goal is to be able to run back to my base after clearing launch in under a minute without having to run past other active bases.

    Getting Started

After spawning your main goal is to get away from the new spawn beach as fast as possible. Look at your map and see where Launch and Outpost are. You'll want to eventually end up at Launch but it helps to stop at Outpost first.

As you start running focus on picking hemp plants and putting bags down and ignore everything else. Every time you put down a bag you are making progress towards your goal - some people prefer to get a bow first but I'd rather die without a bow and respawn 3 minutes away from where I want to be than start over and have to run 15 minutes through new spawn beach again.

Once you start getting closer to Outpost start collecting some components (you should have bags down so if you die it's not a huge deal). While you're still around Outpost farm a few stone nodes.

Recycle your components saving some rope for crossbow/armor. Trade your stone for wood leaving enough stone for arrows and a pickaxe (or buy one/jackhammer depending on your scrap). If you didn't get a lot of frags from recycling buy some with scrap.

You should leave outpost with a Crossbow, Nailgun, basic clothes/wood armor, metal door (double door preferable) decent amount of wood, cloth, pickaxe, metal frags. Find the safest route to the outskirts of Launch and try to avoid fights (go at night if you need to) until you get to the spot where you'll put down your base. Ideally the only thing you'll still have to grab to build your base is some stone as you start to get towards your build location.

    Putting down your base

Ok - so you safely got over to launch and after looking around found a little area near the build zone away from and cleared the stone nodes there.

My end goal is a solo is always to have a HQ 2x1 bunker with sheet metal honeycomb at the very least. In my experience, if you pick a good location and don't fight out of your base most people will recognize the 2x1 bunker, see the key locks and decide it's not worth the effort when they can go after group bases or non-bunker solo bases.

TBH I don't think I've had a 2x1 bunker raided since before they switched to turrets requiring electricity.

If you don't know how to build a bunker base watch this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaNG7u8aIwc . One thing you should do is confirm that you can place triangle honeycomb around each of your bunker walls. I normally build some extra rooms around the outside of the 2x1 to fit my tier 3, research table, airlock with storefronts, roof access etc. but make sure you don't build your airlock where the honeycomb around the 2x1 should be.

    Farming/Fighting

Ok, at this point you have a stone 2x1 bunker down. If you don't have any extra wood/stone go farm a little bit outside of your base. Before you start trying to snowball or take fights I'd recommend heading in to Launch to start collecting components and scrap. There's two main parts of Launch - the buildings near the recycler (has around 15-20 crates + the military crate in the chain link fence) and the area surrounding the elevator (10ish crates + green crate + 20 barrels). Since your base is close feel free to clear out half of launch and run back to your base with all your components. Initially I like to stockpile some components but feel free to recycle if you think it's safe enough (make sure you save springs, rope, pipes, and a few semi bodies). If I'm close enough to Outpost sometimes I'll just skip recycling at Launch and just do trips at night to Outpost to recycle all at once.

Once you've done a couple runs you've probably found some sort of tier 1 weapon from crates and you should have enough components to make basic weapons/gear.

My goal is normally to get a SAR/custom/tommy and a tier 2 at this point. I normally find either a waterpipe/DB/revo and just by playing smart around Launch I'll kill someone with a sar and then push to a tier 2/guns.

If you aren't a great PvPer you can either find an active base to door camp with a DB/eoka. If you can fly a heli you can start doing launch runs and probably get one from the elite crates. On a high pop server the green crates in launch respawn so fast that if you just keep checking them you'll normally get a tier 2 weapon by day 2 with some luck.

    General Tips

Tip #1 - Progress over anything. The most important thing with playing as a solo is to limit how often you die with loot and maximize how often you bring loot back to your base. Doing oil with a revo is great until you get countered and realize you spent an hour and made no progress. In that same time period you could have cleared out launch twice with relative safety. As I get further in the wipe and have supplies stockpiled that's when I start taking more chances because the risk isn't nearly as bad and I won't lose as much progress.

Tip #2 - Always look to third party fights. When you're roaming stay away from the roads and try to roam through the high mountain tops. Wait until you hear gunshots and see if you can third party the fight. Try and get a good angle and wait until someone dies and then try and kill while they are looting.

Tip #3 - Your goal is to win the fight - not loot. This is the hardest habit to break but think of your first kill as setting up your fight. If you don't have a gun it might make sense to rush and loot the first body but if you are using a sar already never loot the first guy you kill. The second he's dead fall back and try to get a different angle to assess the fight. There will be fights where you kill a couple people but it's not safe to loot and it's better to get back without losing your initial gearset.

Tip #4 - The DB is your friend. If you aren't going the route of doing oil/launch puzzle to get your first weapons prioritize getting a DB as soon as possible. If you roam Xbow/DB you should be able to get a sar pretty easily. Find an active base and then door camp them, camp out by a recycler, etc.

Tip #5 - Use a silencer. It works well on the Thompson and Custom - it can work on the sar too as long as you keep your distance and take it off if you get into a heads on fight. It's also extremely useful if you run into lower geared guys because you can quickly kill them without giving up your position to other groups roaming.

Tip #6 - If you are fighting as a solo you should be playing really sneaky. Never just run straight into a monument. Circle around it and for a few minutes and see if it's active. Avoid running along roads. If you see other players try to follow them for a bit to make sure they aren't part of a bigger group.

Tip#7- I've tried every single guide out there to optimize Rust especially to limit the little microstutters. The only two things I've seen that make a difference - disable fullscreen optimization mode (this is a settings Windows forces, right click rust.exe and disable it in the properties menu). Increase your gc.buffer time in the console bc every time it clears the buffer you'll get the little stutter lag Rust is famous for.

Is it time for bunkers to go?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 04:20 PM PST

Bunkers have been in for a while now, they're pretty overpowered. They remove the weakness of doors which is the whole principle which building / raiding was designed to rely on.

A lot of people will downvote because they want to keep their loot safe, but think outside this and how things may be different without bunkers for both raiders and defenders.

(Along the same lines, roller doors are pretty strong for their cost to build and workbench level. 9 satchels I believe which is close to a stone wall... What's up with that?)
