[BUG] Something game-breaking that shouldn't happen.

[QoL] Quality of Life change that doesn't necessarily break the game, but would be nice to fix.

Please try to include helpful evidence related to the bug, such as screenshots, videos, or GIFs.

Describe how to recreate the bug, if you know how.

If your bug has already been posted, upvote it and reply to it with your info.

Why an auto sorter for vanilla rust furnaces wouldn't make sense - My ideas to fix it (Long suggestion with short TLDR)

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:51 PM PST

TLDR: Get rid of multiple slot smelting. Make smelt speed x3 for small furnaces and go one stack by one when smelting.

The code is already there since that's exactly what wood does on furnaces. It just needs to be readapted.

    ----

Okay so there's the thing. There are lots of modded servers that offer an "auto sort" feature for their furnaces, which splits items on the grid equally. That's a pretty cool feature for a modded server but if that makes it to vanilla version I'll be a bit pissed off because it's like putting a patch on an issue instead of fixing it.

Let's face it. Us experienced players know how to set up a furnace but the mechanic of splitting everything isn't logic for newcomers and honestly sometimes it's a pain in the ass needing time and space to split everything, specially if you have multiple furnaces (which happens to be pretty common).

If we add an auto sorter to the nowadays version, it would be like patching an issue with a nice cover instead of just getting rid of the issue itself.

Let me explain my simple idea: make furnaces like Minecraft ones. Fuel goes on the bottom, anything you want to smelt goes on the top, when smelted it goes to the right, and charcoal would be on a bottom right slot. Then triple the current smelt speed and we're all set. No one asked me anything because I didn't even send the post but there are some potential questions and answers:

    • Why triple speed?
      • To cover the lack of three simultaneous smelting slots setup typically used.
    • Wouldn't this get rid of different setups that are not wood-three ores-charcoal-smelted?
      • Yes it would. But let's face it, what variation can you do on the small furnace that doesn't shit on its performance? Putting double wood to go afk longer also requires double charcoal space, leaving you with only two more slots to put ore+smelted so you're essentially unable to put more than 1000 metal so there is no point on that.
      • There is no point either in smelting two different items at the same time. Wood, two items, two results, one charcoal. That's 6 slots and would fit in but it's pretty innefficient and slow and not worth it even if you're going to sleep and leave furnaces ON.
    • But then only 1000 ore would fit instead of 3000
      • Right. This is an issue to tackle.
        • On the "it's okay" side, with the current system you're unable to store more than 1000 smelted items with a regular setup so it wouldn't harm performance to be able to put only one 1000 stack there.
        • On the bad side, extra space sometimes comes handy to save your ores when you're starting or lazy to put them somewhere else.
        • Ideal fix: the slot lets you stack 3000 ore there. Issue with that fix: that'd probably lead us players to exploit this like we exploit vendor machines and save our ores on stacks of 3000 instead of 1000. The ideal fix2 for the ideal fix would be to fix that exploit but that would be asking too much maybe.
        • Actual ideal fix: put three slots for ore but don't make them simultaneous like current system. Just make it to smelt one stack at triple speed, then switch to the next stack. Virtually the same thing but more comfortable and logic to use.
    • What about large furnaces? They have triple the slots of a small furnace, letting you customize more what you want to smelt.
      • Right again. The fix for this would be simple with a couple flaws: just make it like Minecraft's brewing stands but a bit modified. Three wood slots to fuel 15 ore slots. Only one wood slot would be enough to fuel all 15 ore slots. The ore slots wouldn't go faster if splitted, just be consumed in order. There would be 15 results, letting you put different ores or smelt everything without needing to store it. We'd need also three charcoal slots, since 3000 x 0.75 = 2250 (Two 1000 stacks + a 250 one).
        • Why x15? Simple: a large furnace can have up to 15 smelting slots (+1 wood, +1 result, +1 charcoal = total 18). This means that top speed for large furnace is x15.
        • Wouldn't that be better than current large furnaces? Yes, it would, since we'd have the theoretical 15 slots + 3 wood + 3 charcoal + 3 result = 24 slots and regular furnace is just 18. This wouldn't be a problem for me, since I think large furnaces need a huge buff. Reasons there.
        • If Facepunch doesn't think the large furnace needs a buff, x9 would be the speed of that setup. Putting it to x9 would be actually a nerf to large furnaces since they'd force you to use a slower-than-max-speed setup and we don't want them to be even worse.
    • What if I want to smelt lots of wood to make charcoal?
      • This is certainly an issue for those wanting to smelt large charcoal quantities while AFK. Fixes are:
        • No fixing at all because it's a niche thing
        • Adding a new recipe that lets you burn wood for charcoal. This fix would be harder to balance like before since they'd need to take in account a) smelting would be x3/x15 instead of x1 - b) That would give 100% wood to charcoal rate and right now it's 75% so I'd just apply the "no fix" solution if Facepunch doesn't want to buff coal generation or adding the wood to charcoal smelt recipe if they do.

If you have more questions about my idea just ask them. I am trying to be a game dev on my free time so I need to come up with ideas for mechanics. I'd also love some feedback for the same reason.

I think that Facepunch will eventually put either this fix (not because this post but because it's the most logical way to go) or the auto sorter (because it's the easier way) so I may be writing a lot for nothing but I like to write so no issue.

    Have a good day.

What is that random bang sound you hear when you're almost finished loading into a server?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 10:53 AM PST

So there's a bang sound every time I load into a server, always towards the end of loading when it's almost finished. The only thing I can compare it to is someone hitting wood really far away, or firing a double barrel.

It also happens randomly in game. There's just nothing there at all despite a clear sound being made. What is this sound?

EDIT: Spawning in makes a noise, but I thought that sounds more fleshy. This sound I can also hear in game randomly like really far away, like someone is raiding a base but that's not what it is.
