    Get Back to the Roots

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 05:54 PM PDT

Can we get some true throwback Vanilla official servers? Not Legacy, but more so the patch RIGHT before minicopters were added was probably the peak of the Hardcore Survival game that Rust was. It has became just another arcade shooter, with the easily macrod recoil patterns to exploiting every adventure-survival aspect of the game with minicopters. You can scout out solo and small group players, locate dense forests and resource node spawns, barrel routes, and fast track access to monument puzzles. Horses and Boats made sense, QoL improvement to land travel. They dropped helicopters in an environment designed to be traversed on foot. Flying to oil, atop of monuments, with ZERO endgame PvPvE path afterwards to direct groups away from griefing early game players. Me and the boys just havent had the same enjoyment we used to before the map became meaningless via minicopters.

I miss the old rust sometimes

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 05:43 PM PDT

Idk about anyone else but I miss rust a few years ago, I remember watching people like sniping soup and faceless gaming just dick around and it seemed so fun all the different interactions they had with people and they didn't have to take the game so seriously . I got the game and just haven't had near as much fun, I mean don't get me wrong I've had fun wipes with friends but most wipes the servers are dead a few days in if I haven't been offline raided and everyone is just so focused on the pvp that you can't have fun. Maybe it's just me but it feels like a combination of bad development decisions and a changing community that has caused this. Just looking for thoughts/ debates so no need for hate it is still a fun game I just personally think it could be much better.

The concept of Offline Raid Protection and You: A discussion into offline raiding and the idea of ORP.

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 10:32 AM PDT

So we've seen this thread time and time again. Before I even considered making this thread, I took the time to read through previous threads, consider everyone's feedback, and essentially make an attempt to compile these "ideas" into one "constructive" thread because I don't think this concept will go away any time soon and I do think that there is potential for it to be a viable answer to some issues about offlining, if it's implemented properly. I'm gonna try to make this thread short sweet and to the point so we can have some constructive discussion. TLDR at the top so in case you just wanna skim through the points.

TL;DR - Why did I make this thread? I'm currently on Facepunch West 2, there has not been a single beyond bow tier online raid this entire wipe. A few large clans even got "offlined" which to them is when another clan decided to raid at 6am and I guess it was 12 attackers and 2 defenders. Kinda offline when you consider how many people are in those clans. I know you could say "choose another server" but from my experience, it really doesn't change much. I want to see online raiding encouraged. I want online raiding to be the "profitable" approach. And offlining to not be profitable but rather just "area denial". I want both ideas of raiding to coexist and happily be balanced. But they are not. Offlining is simply the more profitable approach, the easier approach, the more strategic approach. Essentially, there's no reward for online raiding other than self gratification of getting into a PvP raid. And that's what needs to change. The fact that online raiding is not rewarded. I'm sick of being offlined and at this point I've played the game for this long, every single time I get raided, I am more disappointed that someone didn't just online me, I would have rather invited people to my base, handed them rocket launchers, and said, "okay lets do this" and let them try to raid me. That would have been more fun than hopping online and seeing "you were killed". Make an ORP item with various guidelines, it gives your walls/doors/structures +100% defense. Stone wall 4 rockets online, 8 rockets offline, simple as that. Encourages online raiding, while also not entirely blocking offline raiding, but rather just making it less profitable. ~~

First off, for those who don't play any other survival games,

    What is ORP?

Well at it's core, the concept of ORP is, your clan goes offline, and then after a certain amount of time passes, your base is protected. Seems like a good thing right? Seems like something that everybody in a game like rust would benefit from right?

Why your "invulnerable base when you are offline" idea gets downvoted:

The major reason most of your requests for ORP in Rust are being downvoted is because many of you are asking for invulnerable, unraidable, structures. This is a bad idea for Rust specifically. As others have mentioned in these previous threads, having an annoying roof camping neighbor is a possibility every wipe. If you make him invulnerable during off hours, and his playstyle makes it difficult to get an angle during on hours, the guy is practically unraidable, or would require a lot more than just a few people raiding. That asshole NEEDS to be offlined. People have made this scenario very clear across multiple threads about ORP, so is clearly a top concern among many players.

Why "offlining" is the best raid approach:

You are not contested. They can't despawn the loot. You can take your time. It's easy to profit from an offline raid.

Why "onlining" is the least traveled path:

You have to "waste" rockets firing at players in areas that are not critical. Other clan members will wall off a chest area and then begin despawning loot. You have to rush. Almost never profitable due to a combination of having to use a lot of extra GP and them despawning loot before you got in.

Why rampant offlining is bad for the game:

It reduces potential PvP in a server and kills the server quickly. If multiple clans are offlining and continues throughout the wipe. These servers typically die 2 weeks in because the only people left on the server are those who literally can't be offlined since they always have a number of people on 24/7. And it would take hours to even offline these clans considering they have more than 10 structures behind their walls. A lot of players/friends I know who get offlined do not "start over" like most of us do. They simply quit and play another game until next wipe. But the complete opposite happens during an online raid that we lose. It hypes everyone up. Gets us all to wanna start again and make a BETTER base.

Okay so u/T_Typo_o, since you apparently have this all figured out, what do you propose we do?

Okay look I'm not trying to make waves and act like I know every answer to Rust and offlining, I'm just some asshole with ~1k hours (rookie numbers to some) trying to make the game more fun, the point I'm trying to get is. Being defeated in an online raid does not have the same "loss" feeling that being offlined does. In fact, being defeated in an online raid is one of the most motivating things this game can do to you. It's full of action, non stop action even. If you have your base set up right, you shoot, you die, you respawn quickly in a bed, grab more guns, get some action, maybe make a play, try again. Online raiding is probably the most fun you can have in Rust, and I feel like it has become unrewarding to a lot and essentially I think players at this point are being encouraged to offline.

I guess my proposal is an ORP item that you have to craft, and has a set of guidelines to how it runs as well (like if you guys think it should need fuel or etc) but I think this is a "conservative" idea to START. And shouldn't upset that many.

When ORP is active, walls and doors gain 100% defense (twice as many to raid):

So why do I think this is reasonable? It removes the one big thing that I think makes offlining so rampant. It makes offlining LESS profitable. It would not make offlining impossible, nor would it make it that much more expensive either. I think doing this would tie into the true concept of an "offline raid" which SHOULD be for area denial. And not just "hey look a small base lol i have 4 rockets lets break it".

More online raiding = more third party scenarios, lots of PvP going on, more player interaction. Now it takes 4 rockets to break stone while they are online, or 8 when they are offline. I feel that unless you really hate the people in a base, you will wait to fight them online. Also maybe some tweaks to item despawning to kinda do away with that too.

Thanks for reading my post, any ideas/criticisms are welcome. I'd really like to see a day where I can actually have more than one online raid per 4 months lol.

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 10:02 PM PDT

With the changes coming to the radtowns and oilrig, it would be nice to see the keycards get some overall more usages. If I remember off the top of my head its only like 4-5 swipes before it breaks. With how much more you will need to use them, it'd be nice if they lasted longer.
