Cloth Exchange and My Plea to Facepunch

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 12:57 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Let me preface this by saying that I've been with the game since before it launched on steam and I've seen many changes. Not all of them stayed but the game we have today has evolved incredibly and the current Rust is the best we've ever had. Probably :)

Now because I care a lot about Rust, and as a member of this community I feel like I must voice my concerns about hemp farming and cloth exchange and the effect that it has to Rust's ecosystem, especially on monthly servers.

While I do see and understand your vision for Farming 2.0, that hemp farms and cloth exchange was directed towards more relaxed and casual audience, so that they could still be able to progress and enjoy the game without being forced to contest the more competitive and active players and their pvp prowess.

However, this method is being utilised by the wrong groups of players. Almost every single large group compound today is built on top or next to a water source. Why ? For watering hemp farms, of course. And my issue with big groups using hemp farms as a method of progression and acquiring resources is very well illustrated in Rust's past. More precisely the update that introduced quarries and pump jacks.

There was a time in Rust where you could just place your own quarry and have it dig up ores and stone at the cost of low grade fuel. And fuel could be gathered with the help of pump jacks pumping out crude oil. It was an exciting time and it didn't take a long time for players to figure out that this system allowed for a self sustaining method that was very low maintenance, could be scaled up indefinitely and was also risk free. Quarry compounds started growing like mushrooms after rain. Everyone wanted a piece of rust industrial age!

But after the initial hype died down, people noticed a rather toxic aftereffect of quarry implementation. More and more players were up high in their reinforced towers guarding quarries than in the fields gathering and fighting over resources. Why risk every time running out when you can get your resources risk free, right? Eventually both groups bore more and more. Quarry owners had too much and had little reason to go out. And those without quarry compounds had few competitors willing to duke it out. And then one day quarries were no more.

What I've been trying to do with this short story is to draw a parallel between the quarry system we had in the past and the hemp farm exchange system we have today. And in my opinion, it all boils down to a very simple law of economics: there cannot be a reward without risk. The fear of losing what you have or the thrill of gaining what's in your neighbours pack is what keeps all of us coming back to this game again and again. If progression is able to be done risk free, then it becomes a completely different game. It isn't Rust anymore.

This is where I believe the issue lies in hemp farm exchange method. Large dominant groups capitalise on practically risk free acquisition of resources, guns and even components thus breaking the core concept of the game that to gain resources and progress tech tree you must go out there and RISK IT.

If I am able to get 3 minicopters worth of scrap or a whole box of cooked metal for 5 minutes of planting seeds, not only it is risk free for me to zoom from the safety of my base to the safe zone and back but it is almost effortless. And groups expand this production multiple times over. You can tell by the amount of full metal compounds and how they grew in size over the past month. We are going back to the unraidable state of compounds that existed before upkeep and 3.0 and it is seriously concerning.Possible solutions I would like to propose to this issue:

    • Take cloth exchange out of produce exchange shop. There still are other options for casual players (like trout) to gather scrap for their own individual progression but is labor intensive unlike hemp farming. Trout also requires no blueprints which makes sense for gathering scrap in the first place. If I have blueprints to set up a hemp farm, I have more other blueprints too. So what is the point of a scrap exchange then ?
    • Half cloth yield rates. But this solution can be countered by simply doubling the farm size. And big groups have no problem with that. Longer to set up but resource is the same
    • Double cloth exchange cost. The goal is to make a full inventory of cloth yield less effective scrap thus making it more tedious and less rewarding
    • Make taking a sapling cutting only available at a late stage (mature?) like with berries. That way designated farmer has to be at least somewhat active not to miss the cutting stage. This would further prolong final harvest and yield less effective scrap per hour.
    • Create a cost to every planting batch. Right now hemp saplings cost nothing and can be fueled indefinitely at no cost
    • Could introduce plant diseases (for example Rimworld or Don't Starve) that spread and ruin the crop if there is nobody to tend to it. Planting saplings and going afk for 2 hours to come back to 2000 worth of scrap is just ridiculous to the point of sadness. How am I supposed to feel after a terrifying rad run hauling barely 400 compared to this ? Whats the counter play ? Me making my own farm? I thought we have learned from quarries..

Conclusion: I do believe the good intentions of developers to make this game more accessible to a wider audience. However, certain aspects of farming 2.0 update are being exploited by dominant groups and creating unhealthy ecosystem of the game. All the development efforts do not have to go to waste. Farming 2.0 is still relevant for teas, food and cloth itself. There just have to be some changes made to break the risk free resource acquisition of such a grand scale.

I hope you guys give it another thought.

    Make beds more useful

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 06:19 AM PDT

I think they should let you lay down in your bed(not sleeping bag) and it would not only give you 50%+ comfort but also regenerate health. You could still be able to craft things and look around. I think this would be cool for when you are afk, long nights in the winter biome, or even out of meds. I also think beds with some type of storage could be cool, even if it's just 3 slots for under the mattress gun, ammo and meds. Currently beds are really only used for zergs, better peak downs from windows, and obviously better bag time. Beds are also a tier 1 blueprint, 75 scrap to research, 2 sewing kits 60 cloth and 100 metal frags just to craft. While a sleeping bag is 30 cloth and the only disadvantage is bag timer and durability. I believe if the bed had more too offer, I would consider getting the bed bp, but currently , I'll settle for a couple bags and save the sewing kits for armor and frags for everything else.

Is there a way to export instant camera photos to your PC?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 05:31 PM PDT

I've just bought the Sunburn DLC.

I've been so impressed with the camera features and i got so many good photos with it.

I would like to save those photos in my PC. I don't want to lose them with the wipe.

Any idea on how to do it? Saw that there is a "Save" button when you are editing a photo frame, but it does nothing...

Suggestions: Make ceiling lights shine over a larger area.

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 09:52 AM PDT

Ceiling lights currently barely light up the entire square that they cover. They cost 50 metal and to make your base totally lite up at night you basically need a light in every square block. Make lights cover a larger radius.

PSA to watch yourself especially those in Korea!

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 10:12 PM PDT

I've read Rule #12. This is more to serve as warning to make sure you don't experience the same unfortunate fate that I experienced.

I was in South Korea and as you know the gaming culture there is VERY extensive and deeply rooted in society. I headed over to a PC cafe in order to play some Rust after a couple day break. I log into a PC and load up a server. Within minutes I was banned! I have never hacked nor used scripts in my 5k hours I have played. The person next to me saw what happened and realized what had happened. The SEA region is home to many hackers. In order to avoid HWID bans on their real computers they go to these pc cafes, hack and get banned. Sadly, the computer they use gets HWID banned and any other unfortunate soul like me who unsuspectingly logs in, we get banned! If this wasn't bad enough, I logged into my second account, thinking it was a simple temp EAC ban or an error. Instantly that account was also banned with around 1k hours. So please avoid logging into PC cafe's and other public gaming area's. I messaged EAC support and got the generic automated copy and paste responses.

Not to mention that it seems my home computer also got HWID banned as when my brother logged onto it, he was banned as well.

    Rust on Linux

Anyone have a functioning way of running rust on Linux? There seems to be very little I can find on the internet. I know facepunch has stopped supporting Linux. If anyone has found a way to run it I would like to know how. Thanks!

Pushing mini's while people are seated.. is annoying..

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 07:24 PM PDT

I think they option to push a mini while someone is inside should be removed from the game, It's frustrating when some toxic little kid tries to push you off the bandit camp roof, and exceedingly so when they actually succeed.

This makes the "safe zone" not so safe.

    Life lessons taught in Rust

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 03:34 PM PDT

Post the life lessons that Rust has taught you. I'll start.

    1. The importance of investing money. Don't let a ton of scrap pile up. Get rid of that scrap. Unlock as many blue prints as possible. When someone raids you, they can't take your learned blue prints.

    2. The importance of trusting others. Joke.. you can't trust anyone.
