First impression after watching OTV server on twitch

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 05:07 PM PST

DO NOT EXPECT ANYTHING REMOTELY CLOSE TO WHAT YOU SEE STREAMERS DOING.

I played game for 6 hours today solo, got killed farmed got killed again farmed and got raided by the end of 6 hours with fully decked people and lost all my progress.

That's pretty much what I expected from reviews online but I kinda hopes I would have fun that ppl on twitch are having and I'm not.

I like the game it's interesting and will definitely play more but playing the game is like a different one compared to what you see on twitch. So lower your expectations a lot and you will enjoy it.

    Steep learning curve

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 07:07 PM PST

Today, I learned that I am bad at Rust. I have 15 minutes in the game and like 8 deaths. Also, I've been a PC gamer for like 15 minutes. Glad I was already prepared for how toxic it would be though, lol.

...since a group of 4 started door camping me because they lost a 1v4 at lighthouse....

Yay!! My warm welcome to rust... Note that it's 4 hours into wipe and they wasted a quarter of it door camping a prim solo.

For noobs: Things I wish I knew when I was new

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 04:37 AM PST

I'm not exactly the best player, only at 600 hours since 2016, but here are some things that somehow took me too long to figure out and would have made me play way more efficiently.

    • When you first spawn, you generally want to run inland away from the spawn areas (the shores) picking up cloth along the way to make sleeping bags for checkpoints and to spawn your friends in. I like to run to the nearest outpost/bandit camp, farm some barrels/trees/rocks, and recycle everything to get cloth/metal frags/scrap. Outpost has some nice vending machines for getting started. You can get 250 metal for 20 scrap, which is enough for a metal door + code lock. You can use all your resources to easily make bows/crossbows/compound bows and clothes.

    • At outpost, you can basically buy 200 cloth for 40 scrap by buying a tactical glove and recycling it as well as the sewing kits/ropes, or you can use some of the rope for crossbows/compound bows.

    • Don't underestimate the compound bow. It's fucking strong, and you can make plays vs people with guns. Even the best players in the game with 10k+ hours think this thing should be removed.

    • Any semi-auto gun (as well as the M249) has significantly less recoil while crouching. Spray weapons won't have any less recoil.

    • Learn how to do the good monuments, don't waste your time doing low tiered ones over and over. Learn where to get green/blue/red keycard and then run the higher tiered monuments that use blue/red keycards (launch site is great) to get a lot of scrap.

    • Instead of trying to make a big base on your own, look up some base designs. New players pretty much always build terrible bases with glaring weaknesses. If your base is perfectly rectangular, it probably sucks. Generally, your base is only as strong as its weakest path to the TC or other important areas.

    • You can literally jump higher if you type "physics.steps 60" in the console (without quotes). I have no idea why this is a thing. You have to set it every time you launch the game though, unless you edit your config files to do so for you.

    • Spend a little time on PVP servers, e.g. UKN. The guns are pretty hard in this game compared to others, especially the AK.

    • You're probably going to crash quickly flying a helicopter the first few times, so if you don't have massive amounts of scrap to spare, go into a heli training server.

Reccomended player count for a good solo experience?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:34 PM PST

I'm looking to play solo on a server that doesn't have too many players that it's impossible to set up a base and you ecounter a player every square mile. but doesn't have too few players that i pratically never encounter any. What's the estimated player count that achieves this?

These new players add so much life!

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 08:18 AM PST

The amount of new players that are just around talking and around is amazing!

They have no idea what's going on and make PvP more interesting as it feels like a bunch of civilians are around.

I love the new life that's been thrown into the game and think it's hilarious with all the new players building bases too large for them. Even if they end up getting offlined I think the new base designs add so much aesthetically.

Oh and the free loot is nice.

[Concept] What if we had Rust VR?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:43 PM PST

With Christmas being like a week ago, a lot of people have gotten VR headsets as gifts, so I think for facepunch it'd be a great investment to have rust VR since there will be rust on consoles. It doesn't even need to be a program on the oculus store just make it VR compatible. What do y'all think? Ive been hooked on this idea for days.
