The OTV server is what Rust could be like if it had an option for semi-RP, incentivized PVP.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 03:12 PM PST

For those who have followed the massively popular OTV Rust server over the past few days, you can clearly see how fun non-KOS gameplay can be.

This is how fun Rust could be.

Let me start by saying that I'm by no means a new player. I have 1.5k hours on this game, which might be less than some, but it's more than enough to accurately gauge the state of the game.

Now I know a lot of people love complete chaos, unmotivated raids and clan warfare, but it's hard to deny that what's happening on this server right now is 50x more entertaining than any Trust in Rust-style, build-roam-raid server, even when none of the Rust content creators I know and love are here. There's just so much potential. This game becomes so deep when you're not incentivized to kill everyone you see the second you see them. Sure there are some on OTV that KOS, but even without the measures that are supposed to come in the next server, kills have a cost. Why? Simple:

    • They're publicly broadcast = everyone knows how murderous everyone is;

    • Alliances are fluid = you can lose the trust of your teammates and allies;

    • People have a semblance of care for every other on the server.

Can we simulate that dynamic between perfect (bloodthirsty) strangers? Debatable. But we can try.

I don't have all the answers, that's not the point of this post, but it's clear there needs to be something —another type of Official server?— beside the current system.

I do have some ideas, though. Hear me out. There's been talks of a karma system, and I think that's a good start, but I'd like to propose something a bit more complex, fit for a complex game like Rust: a player-powered karma system assorted with an alliance system.

Right now, you have your 8-man, your zerg, and you have hazy alliances quickly set up in game chat or something, but everyone outside your 8-man appears the same on your screen: a green-dotless Rust character. What if we brought a little depth to that?

Imagine being able to mark certain people as either "friendly", "neutral" or "enemy", and being able to share that information with your teammates? Suddenly, you don't have to be so jumpy every time you go through the woods outside your base, because all your neighbors show up on your screen as friendlies, and people who show up as neutral or enemies, you can choose to mow down in true Rust fashion —at the cost of ending on their "KOS" list— or ignore.

Now imagine that, aside from that, you're able to officially ally another clan, and thus share your friend/foe list? Now suddenly you know that this guy who roofcamped you while you were recycling at Spermket is friendly with your allies? You can now go to your allies and discuss this: can you get your loot back? Can you both rediscuss the friendly status of this guy? (There would need to be some sort of dillution system so that friendlies marked by your direct clan have less weight than friendlies market by your allies, but still.)

Imagine how much power you'd have being allied/friendly with everyone. Now suddenly people don't want to touch you because you're allied with X or Y clan, etc. And breaking the peace means way more than a simple "triple headshot, he's dead!!"

But, whatever it is, we need something beside the current KOS system.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. I love Rust, but I don't think it's reached its best self yet.

The new blueprint system was an amazing idea

Makes the game 5x easier for solo's, it seriously saves around ten hours of time through using the tree rather than rolling scrap at tier 2 / 3 workbenches. It obviously will benefit groups but I feel like it's really evened the playing field in terms of efficiency.

    Fucking amazing.

New player. Is it impossible to play "casually" on big servers?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 09:22 PM PST

I've owned Rust for many years, but very rarely played it. Mostly because, you guessed it, how toxic people are. Because of the recent twitch-hype, i got an itch to play this game again. Me and a friend loaded up the game and joined an official server with like 200 people. After finally getting past the whole "getting killed on the beach 100 times", we played for an entire evening before calling it a night, and decided to play again the next day. We had been raided and all our stuff was gone. It's very frustrating, not gonna lie, since we had a very small base and not a lot of loot, so i don't get why our base was attacked. Since we're noobs we hadn't really secured our base a lot, so we decided to do that and try again. We farmed a bit, and built a small house entirely out of stone, and made 5 metal doors with code-locks to reach the inner room. We also built the house on a small island at the edge of the map, so i figured we were pretty safe. Farming scraps takes forever, i feel like, as the only way to get scraps afaik is to risk it all by going to the mainland and find barrels, or get a boat to try our luck at sea. There are people with AK's everywhere and they shoot on sight every time. So farming feels like a very slow process. Still, i really enjoyed the whole "sneaking around to farm" a bit actually, and it got my adrenaline pumping. I farmed around 300 scraps and i was saving up to a level 2 workbench. I then decided to take a break and play the next day. Logged in, and yeah, we're dead, base completely destroyed and all the loot gone.

I would understand this a lot more if we built a big base in a central position and all that, but yeah.. I don't have time to log into this game every few hours. We could have built our base even more secure, but from what i saw the base was pretty destroyed overall and they likely used many explosives, so i think we were screwed anyways. I was excited to play, but my motivation to play is very low when i realise i have to basically start all over again, because progressing is very slow when people are so aggressive. Yes, we could find a low-populated server, but i don't want that as it takes away a lot of the fun. I like having lots of people, i like the risk-taking, but what i don't like is having to start all over again so easily. Is this game impossible to play "casually" on such a server? What can i do to speed up my progress so i don't play 5hrs only to just have a simple shotgun?

    Where to build your base?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 08:08 PM PST

Hello. I had been playing on a low pop server lately and I had a really good location for farming. Water treatment, dome, gas station, sewer branch, and outpost decently close to each other. Got offlined 4 days later. I've been trying to find a server with a map as good as that one but can't seem to find one. What are you guy's base location most of the time?

What I’ve Learned in 4 days of No Lifing Rust

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 01:23 PM PST

Being nice to people is way more fulfilling and rewarding than being an angry little monster and griefing everyone. 4 days in and two of us are through about 3 whole work bench trees and that's after moving servers twice. It's cool to be selfishly selfless, it'll reward you. :)

    PSA to all new players:

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 03:50 AM PST

4.6k hours here, I've been around the block. Been knee deep in clan shit and worse.

The best advice I can give you is this:

Hunting bow/crossbow/compound bow will get you further than anything else in the game, pound for pound.

Invest the time to get good with those, you will see immediate progress if you do.

Search "aimtrain or aim train" on the server list and join one, spend an hour each day just landing shot after shot after shot. Profit.

How does building durability even work?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 06:15 PM PST

Someone destroyed my wooden door in literally 3 hits and put their own up. My friend and I hit it with a metal hatchet and literally every 10 hits is 1/200 health and the hatchet broke at like 180. How do we get this down and more importantly how are people breaking this stuff so easily / fast?

    Youtubers/Twitch Streamers playing Rust

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 12:12 PM PST

I recently noticed big time streamers like Shroud, Poki and others with some Youtubers ( some big and small) have started posting them playing Rust.

Don't get me wrong, I think this is a good thing.. to have more exposure to people about Rust as a game. I was wondering where did this come from? To my knowledge none of them were prior Rust players ( unless I haven't looked deep enough).

I was wondering on your thoughts about this, some of you with 10k plus hours or just beginning. I know there is a downside of more toxic players (youtubers/Streamers/Reg people) joining just to troll but... I mean isn't that the Rust experience already?? 😃
